Housecall Pro integrations: what the API allows and what to build

Housecall Pro has a public API and webhooks on its top plan. What a developer can connect, what's worth building, and the security basics before you hand out a key.

Housecall Pro does a lot out of the box: scheduling, dispatch, estimates, invoicing, payments. Most home service businesses that run on it never need anything else. Some do. The office retypes the same customer into a second system, the service report doesn't look like your company, or a lead source you pay for lands in an inbox nobody watches.

When that happens, the useful question isn't "which software should we switch to?" It's "what can we connect to the software we already use?" With Housecall Pro, the answer starts with its public API.

Quick answer: does Housecall Pro have an API?

Yes. Housecall Pro has a public API, documented at docs.housecallpro.com. According to Housecall Pro's help centre, API access is available only to Pros on the MAX plan, so check your plan first. An Admin generates an API key, with full access or read-only, and gives it to a developer. The API covers customers, jobs, estimates and scheduling, and webhooks can notify your app when jobs, estimates and customers change. Housecall Pro doesn't build or support custom integrations made with API keys: whoever builds it maintains it.

What the API gives a developer to work with

The public API documentation covers the records a home service business runs on:

  • Customers. Create, find and update them, so a lead from your website or a form doesn't get typed in twice.
  • Jobs and estimates. Read them, create them and update the schedule, which is what you need for reporting, follow-ups and anything customer-facing.
  • Webhooks. Instead of checking every few minutes, your app can be told when something happens: a job is created, scheduled, completed or paid; an estimate is created or sent; a customer is added or changed. Webhooks are switched on from your Housecall Pro settings, and each event is signed so your app can check it really came from Housecall Pro.
  • API leads. Housecall Pro's help centre describes an "API Leads" channel in the job inbox: leads your own systems create through the API show up there, ready to be answered and turned into jobs or estimates. That's also a MAX plan feature.

The details change over time, so a developer should read the current docs before promising anything. We do.

Five things worth building on top of Housecall Pro

  1. Leads that land in the right place. Your website form, a quote calculator or a landing page from an ad campaign creates the customer and the lead in Housecall Pro directly. Nobody copies details from an email.
  2. Service reports in your brand. The technician records the work, photos and signature; the app turns them into a report with your logo and colours and files it against the job. We built this kind of reporting tool for Captain Plumber, a plumbing company in Kelowna, connected to QuickBooks; the same pattern works with Housecall Pro.
  3. Follow-ups that don't depend on someone remembering. A job is completed, so the report and a review request go out. An estimate has sat unanswered for a week, so the customer gets a polite nudge and the office gets a list.
  4. Reporting across systems. Jobs and estimates from Housecall Pro next to your ad spend, your call tracking or your accounting, in one view your team actually opens.
  5. A customer-facing app. Upcoming visits, past reports and estimates to approve, in your own app or on your own domain, built from the data Housecall Pro already holds.

We've put mockups of a branded report, a customer app and an office dashboard on our Housecall Pro integrations page.

Before you hand out an API key

An API key is close to a master key for your business data. A few habits matter:

  • Read-only unless writing is needed. Housecall Pro lets you choose full access or read-only when you generate a key. A reporting dashboard never needs full access.
  • One key per integration. If a contractor or tool stops working with you, delete that key and nothing else breaks.
  • Keys live on a server, never in a website or an app. Anything shipped to a browser or a phone can be read by anyone who looks.
  • Verify webhooks. Check the signature on every event before acting on it.
  • Only Admins can create keys. That's Housecall Pro's rule, and a good one. Keep it that way.

When Housecall Pro alone is enough

Often. Before building anything, check whether a setting, an existing integration from Housecall Pro's app list or its Zapier integration already covers the gap. Renting a working integration usually beats owning a custom one.

A custom build earns its place when the work is repeated every day, when the information has to move both ways reliably, or when what your customers see should look like your company and not like your software. More on that decision in build or buy.

Who builds it

We're a small studio in British Columbia, working with trades and home service businesses across Canada and the US. We're not a Housecall Pro partner; we build on its public API for businesses that already run on it, and the code is yours at the end. If you're on Jobber instead, we wrote up what you can build on top of Jobber.

If there's a step in your week that Housecall Pro doesn't cover, tell us what it is. We'll tell you honestly whether it's worth a build.
